A Prayer for the Commencement of the Parliamentary Year: 7 February 2017
As our Federal Parliament prepares to resume sitting for 2017, we bring it to you in prayer.
We pray for Elizabeth, Queen of Australia, that she will exercise wisely the sovereign rule you have delegated to her for the governance of our nation. We pray for the Governor General and for all who represent our Sovereign in the States and Territories of Australia. Guide them as they carry out their responsibilities for the common wealth, reflecting your love for all you have created.
Give wisdom, compassion and understanding, we pray, to all Senators and to all Members of the House of Representatives. May they, at all times guided by you, speak truthfully, act justly, behave with integrity and walk humbly with you. Enable them to recognise their responsibilities to you and to all their fellow Australians. Grant them and their families health, patience and respect for one another. May our Parliament so govern our nation, in accordance with your will, that at all times your name is glorified and the welfare of this people is assured.
We pray especially for the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, for the Prime Minister and Ministers of the Government, for the Leader of the Opposition and for others in leadership. Inspire them, we ask, to fulfil the responsibilities of their office diligently in the service of our nation.
We pray that all elected representatives may pursue what is best in the interests of all the people of this land. Enable them to correct wrongs of the past and to strive towards a future built upon reconciliation.
We pray for the Officers of the Parliament and for all other Parliament House staff as they support the work of our Parliament. Grant them insight, clarity of thought and endurance as they contribute to the governance of our nation through the efficient conduct of the Parliament’s activities.
We pray in the name of Jesus, Prince of Peace, on whose shoulders rests the government of the nations.
